Darlene Whalen, M.A.Sc., P. Eng., FEC

Darlene Whalen was appointed as a full-time commissioner and Vice-Chair of the Board in May 2000, following a three-year term as a part-time commissioner. Ms. Whalen holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Civil) and a Masterís degree in Applied Science and Environmental Engineering, both from Memorial University. Her technical experience is primarily in the areas of water resources engineering, environmental analysis and transportation systems. Before joining the Board as Vice-Chair Ms. Whalen was with the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University where she managed the Co-operative Education Office and taught in the area of environmental science and engineering.

Ms. Whalen is a past president of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists and served as Chair of the Board of Directors for the St. Johnís International Airport Authority. She has also served on numerous other professional and community capacities, including the Newfoundland & Labrador Science and Technology Advisory Council, the Offshore Petroleum Engineering Taskforce, the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation, and was a founding member of the NL Chapter of Women in Science and Engineering (WISE-NL). In recognition of her achievements in, and contribution to, the engineering profession and the community Ms. Whalen was awarded the Award of Merit by PEGNL in 2016.
